Here's a few tools that panel beaters used.  Back in the early days, lead was used to fill low spots in and seams in body panels.  Sculpting panels with lead required different tools and skills.

 

Back in the 1980's when Bob was in the business, there were just a handful of shops with metal men who knew how to use lead.  Those metal men have retired by now, so lead repairs are probably a lost art.
